Shopify Launches Suite of Blockchain Commerce Tools

• Shopify has launched a suite of blockchain commerce tools to enhance the user experience for their Web3-focused stores hosted by the platform.
• The tools include an API-based “tokengating” tool and expanded crypto wallet connect features.
• The tokengating tool enables merchants to dictate which tokenholders can and cannot gain access to exclusive products, NFT drops and benefits.

Tokengating Tool

The “tokengating” tool is an API-based feature that allows Shopify merchants to set up their stores to control who can access exclusive products, nonfungible tokens (NFTs) and other benefits. This is done by verifying user eligibility through their connected wallet.

Expanded Crypto Wallet Connect Features

Shopify has also integrated with the sign-in with Ethereum (SIWE) protocol led by the Ethereum Name Service (ENS) and the Ethereum Foundation. This allows secure user sign-ins and authentication of Ethereum accounts and ENS domains without giving away private identifiers such as names, phone numbers or residential addresses.

Lawsuit Against Shopify & Ledger

In April 2022, a group of users filed a class action lawsuit against Shopify & hardware wallet provider Ledger due to a large leak of user data in 2020.

Ethereum Community Reaction

The integration was met with excitement from many within the Ethereum community, particularly Sadaf Eth who highlighted the SIWE integration via Twitter on Feb 9th and linked to developer documents explaining how you can build this into your Shopify store.
